Clement V was born Bertrand de Got in southwestern France and rose through the church to become archbishop of Bordeaux. His career unfolded in a world still shaken by the confrontation between Pope Boniface VIII and Philip IV of France. When Bertrand was elected pope in 1305, he did not enter Rome. That fact was more than a travel detail. It signaled that the center of papal politics was moving closer to French royal influence.

Clement V died in 1314, but his relocation of the papal court endured. Six further popes remained at Avignon before Gregory XI returned to Rome in 1377. Clement's legacy therefore sits between capacity and vulnerability: he helped govern an enormous church, but he also made the papacy's dependence on political geography impossible to ignore.
