Steatite

a soft stone, also called soapstone, often carved into Indus seals before being hardened by firing.

What it means

Steatite is a soft stone that can be carved in fine detail. Indus craftspeople used it for many small seals, often engraving animals and signs before heating or treating the stone so the finished object became harder and lighter in colour.
