Polis

an ancient Greek city-state, combining a city, its citizens, and surrounding territory.

What it means

A polis was the basic political community of ancient Greece. Each polis, such as Athens or Sparta, had its own laws, institutions, religious life, territory, and citizen body. The word is often translated as city-state, but it also meant a shared civic identity.
